Maga’Låhi Guåfak - Guåhan

Maga’Låhi Guåfak was a great leader from the mountains of Guåhan [possibly above the present-day villages of Ma’ina, Asan and Piti.]

Guåfak held the same opinion with other leaders regarding the Spaniards and their overzealous determination to control the CHamoru people and their homeland.  Guåfak was determined to defend his village.

On June 23, 1671, a Spaniard Captain Jose de Peralta was killed in a battle.  The Spaniards became incensed and Captain Juan de Santa Cruz led his troops to the mountains in search for the accused.

They met up with Maga’Låhi Guåfak and his people, and a battle ensued.  Then, halfway through the exchange, a Spaniard took aim of the Chief and shot and killed him.

The killing of Guåfak angered many CHamorus, according to Francisco S.J. Garcia, who wrote, “The result of the affair was that 2,000 natives of Hagåtña and other nearby settlements joined to oppose the Spaniards.”
