CHelef was from the village of Orote.
In
1676, during the Chamoru/Spanish War, many leaders had to use various methods
to overcome the powerful weapons that the Spaniards had.
CHelef
posed as a Chamoru worker for the Spaniards.
He lured Spanish soldiers into his boat, offering to take them to
Hagåtña.
As
soon as they were in deep water, CHelef overturned his proa. The gunpowder of the soldiers became
unusable, and CHelef, who was a typically good swimmer, took advantage of the
situation and defeated the Spaniards that day.
He
managed to elude the Spaniards for two years thereafter, until his capture in
1678 in the village of Malesso’.
In
his attempt to escape, CHelef was shot and killed instantly by the Spanish Captain
Don Juan Antonio de Salas.
The
governor then ordered that CHelef’s head and hands be removed and brought back
to Hagåtña to be displayed publically as a lesson for all CHamorus…
