Choko’,
a Chinese by descent, came to the Marianas in 1648, just prior to the arrival
of the Spaniards. He later married a CHamoru
woman from the island of Saipan and established a family.
He
lived in the village of Pa’a, Guåhan.
He
was a brave leader and was well-versed concerning the Spaniards. (He knew of the Spaniards from his past
experiences with them in his homeland.)
It
was Choko’ who informed CHamorus not to believe the priests and to not have
their babies baptized, otherwise they would die. He journeyed throughout the various islands
and villages, imparting that message.
(According to Rodriguez Le’vesque, the Father would use their saliva in
Baptism rituals. CHamorus abhorred this
method used by the priests , because they saw the use of saliva as dirty and
unsanitary.)
Choko’
stood on the side of the CHamorus in their attempt to oust the foreignors.
On
one occasion, he met with Father San Vitores and debated religion.
The
priests noted that San Vitores won the debate.
Nevertheless, he was hated by the priests and soldiers and was forced to
convert to Catholicism.
Shortly
after his conversion, he again reverted his old ways.
Choko’s
fate was not recorded.
