Maga’Låhi Ladåhao - Alaian (Araiao), Sa'ipan

Maga’Låhi Ladåhao was a great Chief from Alaian, (Araiao) Saipan.  He refused to bow to the oppressive foreigners and their demands that he accept Spain as the new ruler of the islands.

Ladåhao led his people on many battles.  They respected him for his wisdom and valor.  At one point under his leadership, he drove the Spaniards fleeing back to Guåhan.  Don Jose de Quiroga, a brutal commander responded by sending more reinforcements.

In 1684, a fully armed fleet of ships landed at Tanåpak and a fierce battle ensued.  CHamorus showered the fleet with lances and sling stones.  The Spaniards, however, responded viciously with their guns and cannons.  Hundreds of CHamorus died bravely.

Ladåhao, although wounded, managed to escape to Gåni (the name of the islands north of Saipan) to recover.  He was later captured and taken to Guåhan where Quiroga swiftly ordered that Ladåhao be put to death.
