Guam - About a dozen
members of "I Nacion [Nasion] Chamoru" held another
demonstration to protest against the restrictions on native fishing rights at
the island's marine preserves.
This protest was held at Matapang
Beach where the Chamorro Natrion [Nation] says the Tumon Bay marine preserve
prevents native Chamorros from most types of fishing, like net fishing.
In demonstration against that,
Danny "Pagat" [Pågat”] Jackson took his net into the preserve and
caught a few small fish. Then he took one of them, and ate it, raw.
"First you have to move the
guts and throw it away and move the head because of the gills in there and then
wash it and here it goes everybody,” said Jackson as he ate the fish."
“The purpose of this peaceful
demonstration is to express the common mans [man’s] fight. Why are we being
restricted from fishing in our oceans? What is the real cause of the detriment
of our oceans and it's living creatures?" asked Offing Jackson adding,
"The Tumon bay MPA has been a parking lot for jet skis and flotation
devices anchored to the bottom. They have replaced local fishermen and women
and their families with tourists and flotation devices. Is this the purpose of
an MPA?"
The Jackson's believe that all
native Chamorros should have the right to fish in any of the waters of Guam.
